U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp released this statement following President Obama's announcement that he will nominate Dr. Ernest Moniz to be the next Secretary of Energy. Moniz, a nuclear physicist and professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, would succeed Dr. Steven Chu.
"Dr. Moniz has an impressive resume and previous experience at the DOE during the Clinton Administration. His work as Director of the MIT Energy Initiative has shown a true breadth of understanding and openness to utilizing all of our available resources," said Senator Heitkamp. "In nominating Dr. Moniz, the White House stressed the President's belief in an all-of-the-above energy approach to move the country towards energy independence. I fully support this approach and hope the Administration will take the necessary steps to show it is serious about taking advantage of the abundant energy sources that we have in this country. North Dakota is a model for that approach as the state is currently at the forefront of oil and natural gas extraction and production, wind energy and biofuels development and production and the state continues to innovate and expand its energy portfolio. I look forward to hearing more from Dr. Moniz regarding his views on how he intends to make the DOE less politicized and myopic and ensure we are taking full advantage of the energy opportunities here in the U.S."
