Issue Position: The people of Iowa should be allowed to vote on the proposed marriage amendment.

Issue Position

Location:

We passed a marriage amendment early in the 2011 session. The Democrat leader would not allow debate on the amendment. They know the people are not with them on this issue and they did not want their members to have to vote on it. They are rightly concerned about the reaction of voters regarding legislators who will not even allow the people to vote on this issue. Major changes in our society should be made by the people or legislature, not by courts. Many may recall that in anticipation of this day I called for an amendment to our constitution to define marriage as between one man and one woman during my campaign in 2006. I will continue to work for that amendment.
