Today, Congresswoman Janice Hahn (CA-44) released the following statement on President Obama's newly announced framework for comprehensive immigration reform:
"We are a nation of immigrants. It is what makes this country strong, and what has always made this country strong. Somewhere in our family history, someone took a chance, someone packed their possessions and their hopes together and came to America--in the hopes that they would find a better life for themselves and their children, and their children's children. With their courage and with their hard work, generations of immigrants have built America into the vibrant nation we live in today.
With the plans announced this week by the President and in the Senate, I am hopeful for the first time in years, that we are finally going to step past our broken and backwards immigration system and secure the reforms we have needed for so long. I agree with President Obama that now is the time.We must do right for those young DREAMers who are American in every way that matters but on paper. But more than that, we must find a meaningful, compassionate and comprehensive solution that gives the 11 million immigrants, who have been forced to live in the shadows, a path to becoming citizens of this great country. I am excited to work with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to get this done."
