Congresswoman Janice Hahn (CA-44) released the following statement today in recognition of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day:
"Today as a nation, we remember and honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and celebrate the upcoming 50th anniversary of Dr. King's march on Washington and his historic "I Have A Dream" speech. Dr. King's life work represented a steadfast commitment to ensuring and advancing equality for all people. This day holds a special memory in my heart from when I was a young child. During the Civil Rights Movement in 1961 my father, Kenny Hahn was the only elected official to welcome Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to Los Angeles. Although aware of the political ramifications of his decision, he knew it was the right thing to do. This simple, but courageous act by my father has been a guiding principle throughout my career to always stand up and fight for what is right.
It was Dr. King who said, "The time is always ripe to do that which is right."
Whether we are fighting for quality and equal education, safer neighborhoods or better jobs, let us begin as Dr. King began, with the belief "that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word.' In honor of Dr. King, let us engage in answering his call to service by building stronger communities not just on this day, but every day."
