Hagan Will Serve as Honorary Co-Leader of the Annual Pilgrimage

Washington, DC - U.S. Senator Kay Hagan will attend and serve as a bipartisan co-leader of the Faith and Politics Institute's 13th Congressional Civil Rights Pilgrimage in Alabama. Hagan will be joined by a delegation of Members of Congress, religious leaders, civil rights advocates, and students in a three-day journey through Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Montgomery, and Selma.

"As a Senator from North Carolina, I am fortunate to have many opportunities to pay tribute to our state's rich civil rights history, and now I am truly honored to co-lead this year's Congressional Civil Rights Pilgrimage alongside an American hero, Congressman John Lewis," Hagan said. "I look forward to participating in events and marches that commemorate some of the most pivotal moments in our country's civil rights movement."

This year's pilgrimage marks the 50th anniversaries of the desegregation of the University of Alabama, the Birmingham Children's Crusade, the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, and Martin Luther King Jr.'s letter from Birmingham Jail. The journey will include visits to all of these sites, and will end by commemorating the 1965 march across Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama.

The pilgrimage will take place March 1-3.

In addition to Senator Hagan, Senator Johnny Isakson (R-GA), House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA), and House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer (D-MD) will serve as honorary co-leaders. Representatives Spencer Bachus (R-AL), Martha Roby (R-AL), and Terri Sewell (D-AL) will serve as honorary co-hosts.
