Statement On House Passage of Bill to Raise Debt Ceiling

Statement

Date: Jan. 23, 2013
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congresswoman Karen Bass (D-Calif) issued the following statement in response to House passage of legislation to temporarily raise the nation's debt ceiling:

"Today's vote was yet another gimmick from House Republicans to continue kicking the can down the road instead of enacting sound economic policies that would help in putting people back to work. Congress has missed another opportunity to put forth a balanced and sound approach to getting our fiscal house back in order, beginning with a clean long-term debt ceiling increase to pay the bills we have already accrued. That must be the goal we work toward in the coming weeks, along with enacting a responsible budget that will not decimate the social contract we have made with our nation's seniors or undermine our long-term economic recovery."
