Congressman Sires' Statement on President Obama's State of the Union Address

Statement

Date: Feb. 13, 2013
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congressman Sires released the following statement in response to the President's State of the Union speech before Congress:

"Last night, President Obama laid out his the agenda before Congress to prioritize job growth and debt reduction in a responsible manner. Like the President, I believe that the strength of our economy coincides with the strength of our middle class. America is built on the principle that no matter ones lot in life, every citizen should be offered the same opportunities to thrive. To that end, I was encouraged by the President's proposals to expand pre-school education, increase investments in job training, and raise the minimum wage.

I strongly believe that Congress must follow the president's initiatives addressed last night to increase American manufacturing and improve our crumbling infrastructure, as ways to not only create American jobs, but to make us more competitive in the emerging global markets. Furthermore, it is imperative that my colleagues and I take note of the President's advice to finally tackle the most pressing social issues facing our nation today by enacting comprehensive immigration reform and preventing further gun violence.

Now is the time for Congress to come together in a bipartisan manner to create jobs, grow the middle class, and reduce our deficit in a manner that does not impact our nation's most vulnerable citizens."
