Congressman Bera's Statement on Sequestration's impact on Medicare and Social Security

Press Release

Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Bera made the following statement on the importance of Medicare and Social Security:

"As a doctor, I've met with seniors who had to choose between buying the medications they need and putting food on the table. That is unacceptable. We must honor the promises we've made to our parents and grandparents so they can get the support and health care they need, and have a secure and dignified retirement. We also need to make sure these programs are around for future generations. That's why I've taken an oath not to take a congressional pension until Medicare and Social Security are protected, and I won't support a bill that cuts benefits that these essential social safety nets provide.

Congress does, however, have to work together to contain runaway healthcare costs. By doing so, we can both address our federal debt and strengthen Medicare. We can reduce costs by fighting fraud and abuse, allowing the federal government to compete on drug pricing, investing in prevention, and spending less money on bureaucracy, and more on taking care of patients."

Congressman Bera recently a signed a letter to President Obama, along with 106 of his congressional colleagues, affirming his opposition to cutting Medicare and Social Security benefits.
