Today, Congresswoman Doris Matsui (CA-06), issued the following statement after Senator Dianne Feinstein introduced legislation that would implement a federal assault weapons ban:
"While I respect a citizen's right to bear arms, I feel strongly that the government must take some common-sense steps to promote responsible gun ownership and to keep guns out of the hands of criminals. There have been far too many senseless gun-related tragedy's in this country and it is time we work constructively on measures that will help prevent future ones. I commend Senator Feinstein and her Senate colleagues for their introduction of legislation that would implement a federal assault weapons ban. We must keep these deadly weapons out of the hands of those who would use them for harm. These weapons have no place in our communities. Companion legislation, authored by Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, is slated to be introduced in the House of Representatives in the coming weeks and I will be an original cosponsor of this important legislation. I look forward to working with my colleagues to take responsible steps to ensure our communities are safer."
