MESSAGE FROM THE DEMOCRATIC WHIP
Today the irrational spending cuts known as the sequester took effect after House Republicans refused to take action. These extreme and irrational across-the-board spending cuts could have a devastating effect on our economy and national security, harming international and domestic programs that effect our seniors, children, business owners, veterans and military personnel. While Democrats have introduced balanced alternatives to replace the sequester in both the House and Senate, Republicans have failed to propose a single alternative and refused to bring the balanced Democratic solution to the House Floor for a vote. It's not too late for Republicans to stop the deepest impacts of the sequester and bring certainty back to our economy.
This week the House passed the inclusive, bipartisan, Senate-passed reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act. I was proud to vote for this bill, which provides essential protections to victims of domestic violence. While this legislation was long overdue, it serves as an example that the House of Representatives can act in a bipartisan fashion, working in the best interest of the American people. I hope to see this spirit of compromise continue as we return to Washington next week in order to pass a balanced solution to replace the sequester through a mix of smart spending cuts and revenues.
