House Republican Conference Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) issued the following statement today in response to President Obama's remarks in Newport News, Virginia:
"In just three days, President Obama's sequester is set to take effect if he and Senate Democrats fail to act. His campaign-style rally in Newport News, Virginia today not only highlighted the devastating impact of his own sequester, but his lack of a single alternative. He traveled 180 miles to Newport News, Virginia instead of traveling one and a half miles to Senator Harry Reid's office on Capitol Hill where he could negotiate a replacement of smarter spending cuts.
"Republicans first passed legislation to replace the President's sequester with more responsible spending cuts and reforms nearly 300 days ago. And with just three days left until the President's plan takes effect, he's using it as an excuse to raise taxes instead of as an opportunity to cut spending. Hardworking Americans all across this country don't deserve to lose their jobs or have their future opportunities threatened because of President Obama's plan.
"It's time for the President to stop campaigning for higher taxes and start leading."
