Today, Congressman Bill Cassidy released the following statement on Transocean agreeing to pay $1 billion in civil penalties for its role in the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill:

"This is a major step forward in ensuring the families of the oil spill's victims receive justice and that Louisiana is compensated for the environmental damages. The civil penalties will serve important purposes, including repairing the coastline and wetlands impacted by the oil spill. The lives lost and the damage to families and small businesses can never be undone, but this is another step forward in the process of recovery."
