Richmond Responds to State of the Union Address

Statement

"I applaud President Obama for further articulating his vision and priorities for the American people. His focus has been steadfast and driven by the belief that we must stabilize our middle class if we want to thrive as a country. We cannot measure our success on Capitol Hill within our respective party lines but in communities and households all across this nation. Democrats and Republicans alike must come together if we truly say we care about the "State of the Union" and not just the current state of our political parties. This level of conviction will require all of us to move beyond our partisan debates and work together with the President to find permanent and lasting solutions."

"Now is the time for Congress to work with President Obama to ensure America makes sound investments in our security here at home, our education system and the manufacturing industry. These are areas that are sure to have a lasting impact for generations to come. I look forward to working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle while pursuing fiscal responsibility in a fashion that does not hurt Louisiana families or neglect important contributors to economic growth. This means applying a balanced approach to deficit reduction and making important yet transparent investments in programs that are working for, not against, our seniors, working class families, and youth. This is the American legacy we are all obligated to pursue."
