U.S. Congresswoman Susan W. Brooks (R-IN) was named Chairwoman of the Emergency Preparedness, Response and Communications Subcommittee just one day after being sworn in as a freshman Member of the 113th Congress. The subcommittee is one of six under the House Committee on Homeland Security.

"I'm honored to serve residents of the 5th District and all citizens as we work toward a safer and stronger America ready to protect its communities from threats posing a danger to our way of life," Brooks said. "My service as a former U.S. Attorney and former Deputy Mayor of Indianapolis has shown me that local, state and federal public safety officials and responders can make a tremendous difference in the lives of their constituents when coordinating efforts closely in the pursuit of a common goal. As a subcommittee chair, I will work with my colleagues to tackle meaningful issues that help us prepare for and respond to the most challenging situations we may face."

The Committee on Homeland Security ensures Congressional oversight of the Department of Homeland Security and aims to better protect the American people from threats posed by all hazards. The Subcommittee on Emergency Preparedness, Response and Communications examines policies crucial to protecting lives and property before, during and after disasters.

"I am pleased to have Congresswoman Brooks as a member of the Homeland Security team, and as chair of the Subcommittee for Emergency Preparedness, Response and Communications," House Committee on Homeland Security Chairman Michael McCaul (R-TX) said. "Her background in counterterrorism makes her exceptionally prepared to lead efforts to improve our emergency response systems. I look forward to working with her to oversee DHS in order to improve both security and fiscal accountability to the American people."

In addition to her role on the Committee on Homeland Security, Congresswoman Brooks currently serves on the Ethics and Education and Workforce Committees. To view the original release from the Committee on Homeland Security, please visit: http://homeland.house.gov/press-release/.
