Today, Congresswoman Cheri Bustos (IL-17) called on the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to reinstate wrestling as a Summer Olympic sport.
Bustos signed onto a bipartisan Resolution (H.Res. 71) first introduced by Rep. Dave Loebsack (IA-2), Rep. Jim Jordan (OH-4) and Rep. Tim Walz (MN-1) that expresses opposition to the IOC's decision to eliminate wresting and urges them to reinstate the sport as a core sport of the Summer Games.
Bustos also congratulated Dakota High School for recently winning the Illinois Class 1A state wrestling tournament and the Mercer County Golden Eagles for finishing second in the tournament. Bustos stopped by Mercer County High School in Aledo last month to congratulate the Golden Eagles on winning the 2A Illinois state football championship this past November. In addition to congratulating the team, Cheri also presented them with a signed and personalized copy of the statement she submitted into the Congressional Record congratulating the team.
Both Dakota High and Mercer County High are located in Illinois'17th Congressional District.
"The sport of wrestling has a long and proud tradition here in Illinois, and that is why it is so disappointing that the International Olympic Committee has dropped wrestling as a sport," said Congresswoman Cheri Bustos. "As the real life hockey mom of three boys, I know firsthand the important role sports play in building a strong work ethic and developing good character. I'll fight with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to make sure that future generations of Illinois wrestlers, like those at Dakota High and Mercer County High, can continue to live out their Olympic gold dreams."
