Congresswoman Duckworth Calls on Congress to Pass the Bipartisan Violence Against Women Act

Today, Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth, an original cosponsor of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), released the following statement.

For more than twenty years the Violence Against Women Act has provided hope for thousands of American women. On Feb. 12, the Senate reauthorized VAWA by a strong bipartisan vote of 78 to 22 -- with the support of all Senate Democrats, all female Senators, and a majority of Senate Republicans. The bipartisan Senate bill, and the House bill which I cosponsored, reauthorize VAWA with provisions that protect groups such as Native Americans, Immigrants, and LGBT Americans that often have great difficulty finding protection from domestic violence and seeking justice for it. It is unacceptable for the House of Representative to pass any version of this legislation that does not strive to offer all Americans the opportunity to live their lives free of fear and violence. I urge the House to pass the Senate version of the bill and to reauthorize VAWA with protections for all Americans.
