Statement on the Obama Administration's Report on Sequestration Impacts to Hawaii

Statement

Location: Honolulu, HI

U.S. Representative Colleen Hanabusa (HI-01) released the following statement after the White House released a new state-by-state report on how sequestration would affect jobs and working class families if a compromise is not reached by the March 1st deadline.

"These numbers again highlight the absolute necessity of Congress working together to resolve the multiple budget issues facing our nation in the coming days and weeks, including sequestration, the Continuing Resolution, and budget caps. In the meantime, we need to keep looking for solutions that will minimize the impacts on students, families, and those in need. For example, this week I will introduce a measure to provide the military with a mechanism that would allow them the flexibility to transfer funds that are already budgeted to areas that would reduce or eliminate the need to furlough Hawaii's civilian defense workers.

"I believe that I speak for my Democratic colleagues in the House in saying that we are ready to do what is necessary to relieve the American people of the harsh bite of across-the-board budget cuts and one-sided reductions in funding. We need our Republican counterparts to make a good-faith effort to come to an agreement."
