U.S. Representative Colleen Hanabusa (HI-01), member of the House Armed Services Committee, is once again an original cosponsor of the Military Spouses Equal Treatment Act, which was reintroduced today in the U.S. House of Representatives.
The legislation, sponsored by HASC Ranking Member Rep. Adam Smith, would ensure the spouses of gay and lesbian military personnel receive the same benefits and support as opposite-sex couples by updating the term "spouse" to include legally recognized same-sex marriages in the Department of Defense and the Department of Veterans Affairs.
"We owe every member of our armed forces a tremendous debt for their service, sacrifice, and bravery," said Hanabusa. "Our commitment to honoring them as outstanding Americans must include recognizing their spouses and families--regardless of sexual orientation. While we have made strides by repealing "Don't Ask, Don't Tell' and extending certain benefits to same-sex military couples, our job is not done until everyone who has the courage to put on the uniform receives the same care and respect that they rightfully earned. I urge my colleagues to support this bill."
