Collins Supports Measure to Block Obama Regulatory Ovverreach

Press Release

Date: Jan. 24, 2013
Location: Washington, DC

Rep. Doug Collins (R-GA) has become an original co-sponsor of the Regulations From the Executive in Need of Scrutiny (REINS) Act of 2013. Introduced by Congressman Todd Young (R-IN), this legislation will institute the oversight role of legislative branch by seeking Congressional approval for any major rule proposed by the executive branch. A major rule is defined as having an economic impact of $100 million or more.

"This bill will remove power from unelected and unaccountable federal bureaucrats who have chosen to wreak havoc on the American business community with unwarranted regulations," Collins said. "Too many Northeast Georgia businesses are hurting from the Obama Administration's refusal to follow the legislative process outlined by our Constitution. The REINS Act restores the system of checks and balances originally intended by our founders, and will allow our economy to thrive once again.

"If President Obama is so keen on promoting American jobs and lowering our catastrophic unemployment rate, he should personally call on Harry Reid to bring the REINS Act to a vote in the Senate. Americans are tired of looking to a leader who has no feasible answers to our economic woes, and therefore, I am proud to stand with House Republicans to offer a solution that actually makes sense."

The REINS Act passed the House of Representatives during the 112th Congress, but was stalled in the Senate by Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV). The bill would allow Congress and the executive branch 70 days to approve any major rule. If both branches are unable to act within that span of time, the rule will not be authorized.
