U.S. Rep. Ron Barber will travel to Nogales today to tour the busy Mariposa port of entry with Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano and Sen. Tom Carper of Delaware, chairman of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs.
"We must have adequate staffing for our ports of entry in Southern Arizona," Barber said today. "This is a major point of entry for commerce that is critical to our economy and we must make ensure that there are enough agents and inspectors to expeditiously handle this traffic while keeping the border secure."
Barber is a member of the House Committee on Homeland Security and ranking member of the Homeland Security Subcommittee on Oversight and Management Efficiency.
Following his trip to the border, Barber will resume his district work period schedule that was previously announced. Barber's outreach director, Wendy Erica Werden, will attend today's State of the City speech delivered by Tucson Mayor Jonathan Rothschild.
This afternoon, Barber will read to an 8th-grade class at Sahuarita Middle School as part of Love of Reading Week.
This evening, Barber will host the 60th Solar Power 101, an event that will highlight the solar installations at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base and give residents information about installing solar.
