Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson released the following statement regarding the United States Supreme Court review of Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act in Shelby v. Holder:

"It is imperative that the Voting Rights Act be upheld by the Supreme Court in its entirety, for without it there is a serious threat to the foundation of our democracy. Unfortunately, voter intimidation is still a reality, and the Voting Rights Act is needed to combat present-day disenfranchisement. Americans should not feel threatened at the polling place. Citizens' voices should not be stifled by discriminatory practices. Voting rights must be protected for all Americans, regardless of race or political affiliation. The Voting Rights Act is essential to protecting these rights, and I will continue to stand with my colleagues to oppose barriers that prevent all citizens from voting."
