Today, House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chairman Bill Shuster (R-PA) named Rep. Tom Petri (R-WI) Chairman of the Subcommittee on Highways and Transit.
"I'm honored to be appointed to this position by Chairman Shuster," said Rep. Petri. "A first class transportation network is absolutely essential for our economic growth and global competitiveness.
"Every American is impacted by our transportation system and sees its successes--and shortfalls--each day as they commute to work or school and go about their daily life. Consumers and businesses rely on our roads and highways to move goods across the country. Our current system faces many challenges, and I look forward to working with Chairman Shuster and others in finding workable solutions to improving and strengthening our programs."
"Congressman Petri's experience and knowledge about our highway and transit programs will make him an effective leader of the Subcommittee," Shuster said. "From his long service on the Committee, he is an expert on the issues, and I am pleased he will be part of our leadership team this Congress."
Rep. Petri is currently the second most senior member on the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. The Subcommittee on Highways and Transit has responsibility for the development of national surface transportation policy, construction and improvement of highway and transit facilities, implementation of safety and research programs, and regulation of commercial motor vehicle operations. The Subcommittee is also responsible for the surface transportation bill, which will require reauthorization during the 113th Congress.
