U.S. Sen. Mike Johanns (R-Neb.) today cosponsored the bipartisan Earmark Elimination Act which would establish a permanent ban on earmarks.

"This legislation is an important step in stopping wasteful government spending and ensuring that earmarks are permanently banned," Johanns said. "Spending decisions in Washington should be made in a transparent, open and fair way to give Americans the confidence that their tax dollars are being spent wisely."

The Earmark Elimination Act was recently introduced by Sen. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.).
