Congressman Robert C. "Bobby" Scott (VA-03) issued the following statement in response to President Barack Obama's State of the Union Address:
"The President laid out a compelling set of achievable goals that will foster increased economic growth through investments in our children, our workforce, our infrastructure and our ingenuity.
"Ensuring that every child has access to universal early education, ensuring that more high school graduates are workforce ready, making college more affordable, and raising the minimum wage and tying it to the cost-of-living are all commonsense goals that Congress should be able to come together to achieve. I was also pleased to hear the President call on Congress to address climate change, which if we fail to address now will have a devastating impact on our children and grandchildren.
"The President also reaffirmed that we must address sequestration, but we can't achieve economic prosperity by cutting investments in our future.
"Most importantly, the President challenged us to protect our children from the ravages of gun violence."
