Chaffetz: We Can Find Common Ground while Protecting Second Amendment Rights

Issues: Guns

Congressman Jason Chaffetz released the following statement regarding President Obama's announcement of Vice President Biden's recommendations regarding gun violence:

"I appreciate the recommendations put forth this morning by the president. I look forward to a robust discussion of this important issue. We need to address this problem but not at the expense of our freedom. Millions of Americans deal with guns properly and responsibly every day. Responsible gun owners are not the problem.

"As lawmakers we need to take a harder look at the intersection between lethal weapons and mental health. There is common ground both parties can address. Unfortunately, some face mental health challenges that can make them a danger to themselves and others. Limiting their access to lethal weapons will do more to address the problem than restricting responsible gun ownership.

"I remain a strong advocate for second amendment rights and will continue to fight for our right to bear arms."
