Gallego Statement on Senate Reauthorization of Violence Against Women Act

Statement

Date: Feb. 12, 2013
Location: Washington, DC

The U.S. Senate today reauthorized the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) by a vote of 78-22. Congressman Pete Gallego (TX-23) is a co-sponsor of identical legislation in the U.S. House. Congressman Gallego released the following statement regarding the Senate's reauthorization:

"I applaud the Senate for reauthorizing the Violence Against Women's Act. VAWA protects women who are victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault. It is one of the most effective laws we've had against these acts, which is why I'm a proud co-sponsor.

Playing politics with domestic violence is inexcusable. One hundred and forty two women in Texas were killed by their intimate partner in 2010. That's one hundred and forty-two mothers, daughters, or sisters. I'm hopeful that the House will do the right thing for our families."
