Cornyn Statement on Violence Against Women Act

Today U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) issued the following statement on the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA):

"As a longtime advocate for victims' rights, I have supported the Violence Against Women Act on several occasions in the Senate. Last week, I was proud to again support reauthorizing this critical piece of legislation.

"This is a bill that could do so much good in the battle for victims' rights. Unfortunately the bill that passed today would take away fundamental constitutional rights from certain citizens in order to satisfy the unconstitutional demands of a few. I hope this will be corrected in the House."

Background
Sen. Cornyn has previously voted to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act, and last week voted in favor of an alternative Republican bill that would have reauthorized VAWA while removing an unconstitutional provision. Sen. Cornyn also tried to offer a compromise amendment, but Senate Democrats and tribal stakeholders refused to negotiate a constitutional fix.
