Issue Position: Improving West Virginia's Education System

Issues: K-12 Education

As a former teacher, I understand the importance of a solid education, because it is the foundation for building a secure life. Education is essential to West Virginia's future and it is vital that we provide students with the knowledge needed to compete in today's global economy. By improving West Virginia's education systems and increasing education opportunities, we demonstrate to the citizens of our state what an accountable education system looks like.

To initiate a discussion of change in West Virginia, I directed a comprehensive analysis of our public education system be completed. It is imperative that we review and collectively discuss the significant policy findings made in the report. By working together throughout the next year, we can make a knowledgeable decision regarding which recommendations to advance so that we can improve the delivery of our public education.

This legislative session, I propose incorporating student achievement into every teacher performance evaluation and I propose to establish a pilot program to improve struggling local schools. Under this pilot program, I propose that recommendations from the state audit be piloted in coordination with the Reconnecting McDowell Project, a public-private partnership involving over 40 organizations.

Improved education systems and increased education opportunities can result in more jobs for West Virginia workers. Essential to securing good jobs, is providing a world class education for both our children and adults.
