U.S. Congressman David N. Cicilline (D-RI) is inviting area grade schools to take part in this year's "Valentines for Veterans" initiative in Rhode Island's First District by helping to prepare Valentine's Day cards for Rhode Island veterans and service members.
"Our men and women in uniform have already done so much to bravely defend our country and our freedoms," Cicilline said. "After the success of last year's Valentines for Veterans program, I am looking forward to once again paying tribute to our veterans and their families."
Last year, Cicilline's office collected thousands of cards prepared from area schools for Rhode Island veterans and service members. This February, the second-term Congressman plans to deliver cards to veterans at the Rhode Island Veterans Home, VA Hospital, and to the Rhode Island National Guard's Family Assistance Center, which will help distribute cards to Rhode Island veterans and service members on active duty.
The nationwide "Valentines for Veterans" project has provided millions of cards to American veterans since the program began in 1996. The project also coincides with National Salute to Hospitalized Veterans Week, which is celebrated every year during the week of February 14.
Valentine's Day cards for this year's project are due on Thursday, February 7, 2013. Rhode Islanders interested in participating in the program can drop their cards off at the Office of Congressman David N. Cicilline, 1070 Main Street, Suite 300, Pawtucket, RI. Constituents can also call 729-5600 to arrange to have cards picked up for distribution.
