Cicilline to Serve on Budget, Foreign Affairs Committees in 113th Congress

U.S. Congressman David Cicilline today announced that, in addition to continuing his work on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, he has been appointed to the House Budget Committee for the 113th Congress.

"With my appointment to the House Budget Committee, I am looking forward to working on the front lines of the fight to bolster Social Security, preserve Medicare, and make meaningful investments in job training and education. As I work alongside my colleagues to oppose Republican efforts to cut infrastructure investments and devastate our social safety net, the voices and concerns of Rhode Island's seniors, middle class families, and young people will be heard loud and clear," said Cicilline. "I welcome this opportunity to have an enhanced role working on issues that are important to Rhode Islanders in every corner of our state."

The House Budget Committee, which is chaired by Congressman Paul Ryan (R-WI), has the primary responsibility for setting spending and revenue levels during each fiscal year. Its expansive jurisdiction over the federal budget will afford Cicilline, as a second-term Democrat, the opportunity to weigh in on a wide range of issues important to Rhode Island.

Budget Committee Ranking Member Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) praised Cicilline, saying, "Since coming to Congress, David Cicilline has been a strong and passionate advocate for Rhode Island families. I'm confident that he will continue that work on the House Budget Committee as we fight to strengthen Social Security, protect Medicare, and make critical investments in our nation's future."

Cicilline will also continue serving on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, where he will gain seniority as a second-term Democrat. The Foreign Affairs Committee is chaired by Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL).
