Bachmann Statement on Voting Against Increasing the Debt Ceiling

Statement

Location: Washington, DC

Congresswoman Michele Bachmann (MN-06) released the following statement after voting against increasing the debt ceiling.

"The Senate's failure to pass a budget in the last four years is a stunning failure of leadership and governing. Passing a budget is the most basic duty of Congress, and the Senate continues to blatantly disregard this responsibility. The Senate should be held accountable for this negligence.

"However, giving the President four months of unlimited borrowing authority without a cap on spending is something I cannot support. Adding to the debt burden of future generations will only exacerbate the problem. Reckless borrowing and spending has left the U.S. with downgraded credit, impending galloping inflation, and a nearly $16.5 trillion national debt. The days of fantasy economics are inevitably coming to a dreadful end.

"We are at a point where we do not have a choice: for the sake of our children and grandchildren we have to stop spending more money than we take in."
