Heinrich Statement on Bipartisan Immigration Proposal

Statement

Date: Jan. 28, 2013
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Immigration

U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) issued the following statement today after a bipartisan group of senators released an outline for comprehensive immigration reform legislation:

"I am encouraged by today's bipartisan support to fix our broken immigration system.

"New Mexico's remarkable spirit is rooted in our rich diversity and culture. We need a fair and just approach to comprehensive immigration reform. One that includes a roadmap for undocumented immigrants to earn citizenship, pay a fine, complete a background check, study English, and show a commitment to America. And we can do this while strengthening enforcement and securing our borders.

"New Mexicans are eager for a solution, DREAM Act students deserve a solution, and our economy requires a solution. The time is now to get this done."
