U.S. Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ) released today the following statement in response to President Obama's nomination of Senator John Kerry to be the next Secretary of State:
"I applaud President Obama for selecting Senator John Kerry to be the next Secretary of State and to build upon the extraordinary leadership of Secretary Clinton. It has been my honor and privilege to serve under Senator Kerry's chairmanship as a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and to witness times and again the depth of his knowledge of national security and foreign policy. He will be an exceptional Secretary of State. His life and work have led him to this place, and America will be safer and more secure under his leadership. He is an extraordinary choice for extraordinary times and I am confident he will bring to the State Department the same qualities of leadership he has always shown as a Senator and as Chairman.
"The high-level relationships that he has built with world leaders will allow him to step seamlessly into the position and to ensure that there is no decline in U.S. leadership on important global issues during a transition. My friend, Secretary Clinton departs the office having restored the United States to a position of respect and global leadership in capitals around the globe. I wish her the very best as she begins a new chapter in her life and look forward to continuing to work with my colleague Senator Kerry."
