U.S. Senators Frank R. Lautenberg (D-NJ) and Robert Menendez (D-NJ) announced today more than $4 million in funding to support family planning programs in New Jersey. Awarded through the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Title X Family Planning Program, this round of funding will support the efforts of the New Jersey Family Planning League to provide family planning, reproductive health care and education services to more than 78,000 women, men, and children in northern and central New Jersey.

"This is an important federal investment in the health and well-being of New Jersey families. The New Jersey Family Planning League will use these federal resources to help women in our state gain access to affordable health care in their communities," said Senator Lautenberg, a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, which funds HHS. "Title X has a proven record of providing quality health care and family planning services, and we will continue working to ensure that women in New Jersey and across the country have access to the counseling and care they need."

"Our goal as a nation should be to increase services that prevent unintended pregnancies and promote health, to both improve birth outcomes and reduce health care costs," said Senator Menendez. "As a longtime supporter of the Title X program, I know that this investment will have a large impact on the health and wellbeing of New Jersey's families. Title X clinics serve as an invaluable resource to thousands of women in our state, for family planning and regular health services. For many patients, these clinics are their only source of health care and health education. Financing this type of program is a small investment compared to millions of dollars New Jersey taxpayers end up having to pay to cover the costs of birth from unintended pregnancies and lack of access to affordable health care."

The federal Title X Family Planning Program awards grants to states to provide family planning services and reproductive health care. Title X grantees provide information and contraceptive supplies to all who need them. In addition, grantees provide a number of other preventive health care services including, but not limited to: patient education and counseling, pelvic examinations, cervical and breast cancer screenings, high blood pressure, anemia, and diabetes screenings, STD and HIV screenings, and pregnancy diagnosis and counseling. In New Jersey, Title X funding accounts for over half the public funding for family planning services, and without it, high-quality family planning services for many low-income New Jersey residents would not be available. New Jersey is home to two Title X grantees, the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services Family Planning Program and the New Jersey Family Planning League, Inc., supporting 49 Title X-funded health centers across the state.
