Van Hollen Statement on Russia's Yakovlev Act

Location: Washington, DC

Today Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen issued the following statement on Russia's Yakovlev Act:

"I am deeply disappointed that the Russian Government has chosen, for purely political purposes, to punish the Russian orphans and the American families who hoped to adopt them by passing the Yakovlev Act.

"This law puts at risk the futures of thousands of Russian children who desperately need loving families. For 20 years, Americans have welcomed into their homes and their hearts 60,000 abandoned and institutionalized Russian children who needed adoptive families.

"The Yakovlev Act crassly plays politics with the lives of children. The victims are the hundreds of thousands of Russian children who need parents and the Americans who would like to give them the love and care they so greatly need."
