Statement

Date: Jan. 28, 2013
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Elijah E. Cummings, Ranking Member on the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, issued the following statement on the passing of the Rev. Vernon Dobson:

"It is with great sadness I acknowledge the passing of my dear friend and mentor, the Rev. Vernon Dobson. He was a visionary leader who turned his passion for helping others into a mission to improve our communities.

"Rev. Dobson was a key player in the civil rights movement, both in Baltimore and throughout our State. He learned and lived a basic truth that inspires me to this day: it is not enough to simply be concerned. Only action can change circumstances and outcomes.

"I offer my prayers for peace and comfort to his wife and all of his loved ones in their time of mourning. We have all lost a tremendous humanitarian and role model. I hope the legacy that he leaves inspires us all to act to better our communities and our future."
