Cummings Issues Statement on President Barack Obama's Historic Inauguration

Statement

Date: Jan. 18, 2013
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Elijah E. Cummings, Ranking Member on the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, released the following statement commemorating the second inauguration of President Barack Obama on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day:

"I feel tremendously humbled to witness this moment in our nation's history. So many in our parents' generation -- and ours -- never thought we'd see an African American elected president of this country. Now, not only have we been blessed to see that day, but we will witness the President accept a second term on the same day our nation pauses to acknowledge the contributions of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

"Our President is in many ways a living fulfillment of dreams Dr. King could only hope to see. While his swearing-in will be an historic nod to how far our country has come, we must also realize that the struggle for government of, by and for all Americans is not over.

"Our 21st century civil rights movement to expand and preserve the voting rights of our new majority has just begun. To us was passed the baton of forefathers and mothers who paid dearly for our very existence today. We are the future they dreamt of to continue running their marathon to equality and justice and we must not drop the baton."
