U.S. Congressman John Sarbanes (D-Md.) today released the following statement on the designation of an area of downtown Annapolis as a Maryland Health Enterprise Zone (HEZ):
"This is great news for people in Annapolis who struggle to get the health care they need. Too many Maryland families worry about getting their kids to the doctor and staying healthy to work and earn a living. By targeting these underserved populations, we can continue making great strides in improving the overall health of Marylanders and ensuring they have access to the high-quality care they deserve."
Maryland's Department of Health and Mental Hygiene began establishing HEZs as part of the Health Disparities and Reduction Act. The zones are designed to reduce health disparities among Maryland's racial and ethnic groups and between geographic areas, as well as improve health care access, health outcomes, and reduce costs.
