Congresswoman Niki Tsongas released the following statement today after John Kerry was approved by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to become the next Secretary of State. Kerry is expected to receive full Senate confirmation later today and to be sworn in by week's end.

"With his exceptional standing among world leaders and vast experience dealing with delicate and vital foreign policy issues, there is no one more prepared or qualified for this position than John Kerry. Serving as Secretary of State will allow him to continue his service to our nation and to the world; service he has performed honorably and with great distinction for so many years. The State Department is a natural next step in his lifelong commitment to public service. He is a remarkably skilled diplomat who will be able to put this position to great purpose, including continuing our efforts to confront global climate change, a cause to which he has been so committed.

"I also want to thank Secretary Hillary Clinton for her exceptional service as Secretary of State. Our nation has a better standing in the world as a result of her tenure and I am particularly grateful for her extraordinary work on behalf of women and children across the globe.

"As our nation moves forward, it will look to Secretary Kerry to expand the strong international relationships cultivated by his predecessor. I am confident his leadership will foster growth and progress for America at home and abroad. I congratulate him for this much deserved honor and look forward to working with him."
