Today, Congressman Cedric Richmond (LA-02) issued the following statement in response to Vice President Joe Biden's proposal on gun violence and the President's introduction of 23 executive actions to enforce gun reform measures:
"I commend the President and Vice President for taking action to address this appalling national issue that has plagued our schools and communities. Regardless of our position on gun ownership, we all have a moral obligation to reduce the broader epidemic of gun violence in this country. These senseless shootings must stop. Our actions moving forward will have a lasting impact on the safety of our families and communities, whether it's in Colorado, Connecticut or Louisiana. I am committed to working with our President, Vice President, the House and the Senate to debate his recommendations.
I urge my colleagues in Congress to join me in standing with the President to approve legislation that invests in our mental healthcare system, institutes more rigorous background checks for gun ownership and places a ban on assault rifles and high-capacity magazines.
I call on all Americans, including hunters and sportsman in the great state of Louisiana, to join the national effort to protect our communities. The safety of our families, our sons and daughters, comes above all else. These tragedies are our responsibility and must be our task to eradicate."
