Today, U.S. Representative Cedric Richmond (LA-02) welcomed a new appointment as a Senior Whip supporting U.S. Rep. Steny Hoyer, the House Democratic Whip.
"I have learned a great deal supporting Rep. Hoyer as Assistant Whip during the 112th. We were successful in rallying party support around critical legislation to resuscitate our economy, improve our education system, and restore jobs--issues that truly matter to my constituents," said Rep. Richmond. "This is a role that I am humbled and honored to execute and I look forward to continuing my service representing the great state of Louisiana and the American people in the 113th Congress."
"I am pleased to announce that Rep. Cedric Richmond will serve as a Senior Whip in the 113th Congress," said Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer. "As an Assistant Whip in the 112th Congress, Rep. Richmond worked to help build unity across the Democratic Caucus. I look forward to working with him in this new capacity as we advance Democrats' agenda of job creation and strengthening the middle class."
The Whip is charged with mobilizing the party vote on important legislation and works with Members to build strong support within the caucus for the Democratic agenda. The Senior Whip team is composed of leaders from across the Democratic Caucus. They meet once a week, when Congress is in session. During these meetings, the Senior Whips have a forward-looking, strategic discussion on the key issues facing our nation. Senior Whips are responsible for talking to their fellow Democratic members about upcoming legislation that will be considered in the House.
