Today, Congressman John Yarmuth (KY-3) issued the following statement on President Obama's appointment of a task force to address gun violence:
"I share the President's commitment to strengthening our nation's gun laws, and I thank him for approaching the complex problem of gun violence in a comprehensive way," Congressman Yarmuth said. "Whether it is reinstating the ban on assault weapons and getting high-capacity ammunition magazines off our streets, expanding background checks to help ensure guns don't fall into the wrong hands, addressing gaps in our mental health care system, or other failures, we must address all the factors that contribute to gun violence in our society. This task force will help in those efforts."
Rep. Yarmuth announced this week that he will cosponsor legislation in the 113th Congress to ban on assault weapons. In addition, he is an original cosponsor of H.R. 308, the Large Capacity Ammunition Feeding Device Act, which restores the prohibition of the transfer, importation, and possession of LCADs. He is also a cosponsor of H.R. 1781, which requires a background check for every firearm sale, and H.R. 591, which closes the gun-show loophole. All three bills were filed in the 112th Congress.
Congressman Yarmuth is the only member of the Kentucky delegation to receive an "F" rating from the NRA.
