U.S. Senator Mark Begich issued the following statement after the U.S. Senate passed a bipartisan deficit reduction agreement to suspend the debt ceiling for three months:
"This short-term solution is far from perfect, but it is necessary to give Alaska families and small businesses the certainty they deserve. Today's vote also ensures the federal government will be able to meet critical obligations such as payments to Social Security beneficiaries and our veterans.
"I hope all senators will take these next several months to roll up their sleeves and work on a common sense, long-term deficit reduction plan to get our fiscal house in order and keep the economy moving. We cannot continue to kick the can down the road.
"As a supporter of the "No budget, No pay' measure included in today's package, I will continue to support withholding pay from members of Congress until both chambers come to a real solution to balance our budget and reduce our deficit."
