Hultgren Votes to Press President on Balanced Budget

Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Randy Hultgren today voted to support the "Require a PLAN Act," H.R. 444. The bill passed the House of Representatives 253-167. The bill, cosponsored by Congressman Hultgren, requires the president to submit a balanced budget for Fiscal Year 2014. If the President's proposal is not balanced, the President must provide a supplemental budget by April 1 identifying the earliest fiscal year in which the budget would be balanced and a detailed description of policies to be implemented to achieve a balanced budget.

"It is hard to believe that in the current budget crisis the President missed the statutory requirement of submitting his fiscal year 2014 federal budget to Congress by the first Monday in February. Budgets that tax, spend, and borrow aren't working and have served to drive up our national debt in excess of $16 trillion," said Hultgren. "This has to stop. Republican members of the House have passed budgets consecutively for the past 5 years. This legislation holds the President accountable to put his ideas forward regarding how he would achieve a balanced budget -- a responsibility that families in my district, Illinois, and across the country have to face every day. It is time for the President to step up and address the budget crisis."

Congressman Hultgren supported the No Budget, No Pay Act that passed the House two weeks ago. It requires both Houses of Congress to adopt a budget by April 15. This bill is another important step in the process of requiring everyone, including the President, to do their job.
