Statement

Today, Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) introduced the Donate for Disaster Relief Act. The bill allows taxpayers to indicate on their federal income tax returns if they wish to voluntarily donate to a disaster relief trust. (Please find attached a copy of the bill).

"We need this now," said Hastings. "Superstorms like Hurricane Sandy have a devastating effect on infrastructure and lives. We need to think about how to prepare for these emergencies ahead of time, and stop waiting for the worst to happen before we do something.

"The decision to donate is entirely voluntary, and will help us be better prepared for future natural disasters. As a nation, we must be proactive in being able to help those in their greatest time of need."
