Senators Stabenow, Levin Announce $292,642 in Firefighter Grants for Seven Michigan Communities

WASHINGTON - U.S. Senators Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) and Carl Levin (D-MI) announced today that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has awarded $292,642 in grants to seven Michigan fire departments under the terms of the fiscal year 2004 Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program.

"This grant program helps local communities improve the quality of their firefighting equipment and the preparedness of their firefighters," Stabenow said. "In this way, these grants enhance the skills and readiness of Michigan's frontline first responders and their ability to protect the people of their communities, their homes and their businesses."

"The funds provided by these grants will allow our fire fighters to have the necessary support to perform their duties," said Levin. "With this latest round of firefighter grants, these Michigan fire departments will be able to improve or update facilities, training programs and equipment."

The grants were awarded for the Fire Operations and Firefighter Safety program, which provides firefighters with funding for equipment, training and modifications to facilities.
