"The Republican Party must work with Democrats to avoid the devastating impact that this oncoming sequester will have on American families and our economy. On March 1st, the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) will sequester $85 billion in FY 2013 spending as mandated by the Budget Control Act, unless Congress acts. This across-the-board cut will slow economic growth and job creation while cutting services and investments critical to the American people," said Congresswoman Brown. "Indeed," she continued, "sequestration comes on top of $1.5 trillion in discretionary cuts already enacted, the single largest cause of the economic contraction in the 4th quarter of 2012!"
"Once again, the Republican Party is set on protecting the interests of millionaires and billionaires at the expense of our nation's ability to protect itself," said the Congresswoman. In fact, in Northeast Florida, the proposed military cuts will be outright devastating: the cancellation of one ship at Mayport, furloughing of civilian workforce both in Florida and across the nation; deferring one MILCON project at Jacksonville, as well as canceling 3rd and 4th quarter aircraft maintenance in the Jacksonville area. This is, of course, in addition to the announcement yesterday that the USS Gettysburg, based at Mayport, will have its deployment delayed because of the cuts in the budget.
In the words of Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, "we'll have to absorb $46 billion in sequester reductions and we'll be facing a $35 billion shortfall in operating funds for our active forces we're looking at putting 46,000 jobs at risk (and may have to) furlough as many as 800,000 DOD civilians around the country, who could end up facing a 20 percent cut in their salary we're going to cut back on Army training and maintenance, putting about two-thirds of our active brigade combat teams outside Afghanistan at a reduced readiness level. We've got to cut back on their training, and we're going to have to cut back on the ability to support the troops who are not in the war zone (putting) more stress on those who are in the war zone.'
"The Sequestration will affect domestic and military programs equally, and Congress needs to get to work immediately to solve the debt and budget problems that were caused by Congress! We didn't get into this mess overnight, and we aren't going to get out of it overnight either," said the Congresswoman.
