U.S. Representative Colleen Hanabusa (HI-01) today released the following statement regarding Tesoro Corporation's announcement that the company will cease refinery operations in Hawaii beginning in April, 2012:
"The closure of Tesoro's refinery most concerns me because of the effects it could have on Hawaii's families. In addition to the loss of up to 210 jobs, I am deeply concerned about how the closure will affect Hawaii's already high gas prices, as well as the price of jet fuel, propane, and synthetic natural gas. That hits working people hard.
"I also take this as a reminder of Hawaii's tremendous reliance on petroleum in our everyday lives. We need to maintain our focus on seeking alternative energy sources and encouraging the implementation of higher fuel efficiency standards. Our long-term plan must move us away from oil and toward a sustainable future.
"I hope that Tesoro, having served as a corporate citizen of Hawaii for so long, will continue to look for ways to reduce the impact of its closure decision on our state."
