Today, Rep. Michelle Lujan Grisham (NM-01) marked the 20th anniversary of the Family and Medical Leave Act. On February 5, 1993, President Bill Clinton signed the landmark Family and Medical Leave Act into law.

"As a mother and a caregiver I have seen the benefits of FMLA from both sides. As a young, aspiring lawyer I remember what is like before the FMLA was law and the decisions that were placed on women in the workplace between caring for their families or pursuing their careers. And now, as a caregiver for my mother, I see the benefits the law provides families who are caring for loved ones," Representative Lujan Grisham said.

Over the last 20 years, due to the FMLA, mothers and fathers have taken time to care for new children. Expecting mothers have taken time to care for themselves and seek medical help during complicated pregnancies. Adult children have taken time to care for ailing parents. The protections of the FMLA were most recently expanded by a Democratic-led Congress in 2010 to cover family members dealing with a military deployment or service-related injury.

"FMLA has helped millions of families, including my own, maintain their responsibilities at work and at home," Rep. Lujan Grisham concluded. "As we move forward, we need to look for ways to improve the Family and Medical Leave Act, such as offering paid leave as well as helping America's workers better balance their familial obligations at home with their responsibilities at work."
