Chairman Miller: We Must do More to Help Veterans Find Jobs

Location: Washington, DC

Today, Rep. Jeff Miller, Chairman of the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs, issued the following statement on the latest unemployment report:

"Today's jobs report is a sobering reminder of just how bad this economy is for our nation's veterans. More than 800,000 veterans are jobless and nearly 12 percent of recent veterans are returning home to an unemployment line. This is unacceptable. Those who served our country were there for us when we needed them the most, now it's our duty to serve them in their hour of need. Over the last two years, the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs has made veteran unemployment a top priority, tackling the issue head on with our VOW to Hire Heroes Act, which expanded training and transition assistance for veterans, and our Veterans Employment Summit, which brought together more than two dozen large employers to share best practices on hiring veterans and resulted in aggressive veteran hiring initiatives from key summit participants. Clearly, though, there is more work to be done. In the coming weeks, we will examine a host of new policies, proposals and initiatives designed to fix the problem of veteran unemployment and ensure that all of America's heroes can land a job and achieve the American Dream."
